GC Baseball: Tigers 3B/P Melton tabbed as 15-4A MVP

Corsicana — Tigers senior third baseman and pitcher Hunter Melton was selected as the 15-4A Most Valuable Player by the district coaches.

Melton batted .454 for the season with 15 doubles, six home runs and 32 RBIs. He had 32 walks. On the mound, the Texas A&M signee was 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA. He had 48 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched.

“I am very proud of the type of person and leader that Hunter has become,” Tigers coach Heath Autrey said. “He is not only a great player but a great teammate. It’s a honor for all of the coaches in the district to vote him the best player out of all of the talented players in 15-4A. It was unanimous and a no-brainer.

“His ability to change a game in so many ways was evident every minute he was on the field.”

Tigers junior shortstop Hunter Denbow was the Defensive Player of the Year. He didn’t make an error in 16 district games, and also made several spectacular ones.

Freshman right fielder Brady Harlan was the Underclassmen of the Year. Harlan had a .333 batting average with 26 runs scored and 22 RBIs. He hit .380 with runners in scoring position.

Autrey was the 15-4A Coach of the Year in his first season at Corsicana. The Tigers went 26-10 and advanced to the third round of the playoffs.

The Tigers had three players make first-team all-district — junior pitcher Holden Grounds, senior second baseman Heath Donica and junior outfielder Zane Otten.

Three more Tigers made the second team — junior pitcher Matt Burns, junior designated hitter Zach Rash and senior utility man Jacob Peterson.

Junior pitcher Jeremy Fowler, junior left fielder Aaron Cantu and senior catcher Karsen Minniear were named honorable mention.
