Navarro back in NJCAA Top 10 rankings

Dawgs check in at No. 8 as they prepare for Blinn, then No. 13 NEO

Navarro moved back into the NJCAA Top 10 on Tuesday, keeping the Bulldogs’ outside chance at a national title alive.

The Bulldogs (6-1), who crushed Southeast Prep 70-7 in a non-conference game Saturday to move up to No. 8 in the rankings, need to finish in the Top 2 to have a chance to play in a bowl game for the national title.

There are seven undefeated teams left in the NJCAA after Navarro rival Kilgore, ranked fifth nationally, lost to No. 15 Northeast Oklahoma 42-24. Kilgore, which dropped to No. 13, handed Navarro its only loss of the season.

Navarro plays Blinn and now No. 13 NEO to close out the regular season as the Bulldogs and the rest of the teams in the conference battle to make the SWJCFC playoffs.

With a chance to clinch the SWJCFC regular season crown, No. 5 Kilgore suffered a 42-24 defeat at the hands of No. 15 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. The Norsemen busted open their 21-17 halftime lead in the third quarter with 21 unanswered points.

Sophomore quarterback Clayton Mitchem spearheaded the Norsemen attack with 322 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Michael Thompson caught six passes for 101 yards and hauled in two of Mitchem’s three touchdown passes.

Despite nearly matching the Norsemen’s offensive output, the Rangers turned the ball over five times including one interception by each of their three quarterbacks. Kilgore freshman quarterback Tanner Tausch finished 18-for-31 passing for 187 yards and a touchdown.

With Kilgore’s loss, the Rangers fall into a virtual tie with the Norsemen and Navarro.

Here is the NJCAA Football Poll that came out on Tuesday:
