Corsicana —
Navarro and Grayson County didn’t meet at last year’s Junior College World Series, even though the Texas schools both made it to Grand Junction.
They played a game Wednesday filled with a tournament type of intensity.
The Bulldogs held on in the end 6-5 as freshman Gage Curry, who was just finishing up his career as a Corsicana Tiger last year when Navarro won the national title, got the final two outs for his second save.
Navarro lost a 4-0 lead as Grayson (3-2) banged three home runs to tie the game. The Bulldogs (4-1) then took back the lead in the bottom of the eighth, small-balling their to two runs. Then Curry got two strikeouts to pick up teammate Matt Lynch, who got the win despite strugging to find the strike zone.
“We won,” Navarro coach Whoa Dill said. “They competed. (Grayson) can really hit. We got the job done on the slash hit and the safety squeeze. They battled back and tied the game and I like the way we battled back and got two runs.”
The Bulldogs didn’t flinch in the bottom of the eighth after Vikings catcher Tyler Pearson slammed a two-run home run to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the inning.
Bulldogs catcher Colton Besett started the inning with a single back up the middle. Shortstop Craig McConaughy then faked a bunt and slashed a basehit to the area that Vikings shortstop Trevor Holland vacated.
After Brode Boyd popped out, Colby Cottongame laid a bunt in front of the mound on a safety squeeze and Grayson pitcher Brad Adams bobbled the ball, allowing Besett to score easily. Jake Sutton followed with a single up the middle for a 6-4 lead.
Lynch started the ninth, his third inning of work in relief of starter Chad Young, and walked Tyler Person. Lynch then got a fly ball to center field, prompting Dill to go to Curry out of the bullpen.
The freshman right-hander got his first save Thursday against North Central, and looked even better against Grayson despite giving up two hits. He struck out Vikings leadoff hitter Tanner Houston on three pitches. After two hits cut the lead to 6-5, Curry struck out cleanup hitter Travis Brewster on a fastball right over the heart of the plate.
“Gage came in and threw strikes and got the save,” Dill said. “He wasn’t scared.”
Navarro built a 4-0 lead on a RBI single by Tyler Wilson in the first, then scored three runs in the third on an error and a clutch two-out basesloaded single by Cottongame, who picked up two teammates who had been retired before him with the sacks full.
Grayson battled back as Brian Smith and Pearson had solo shots in the fourth and seventh inning to make it 4-2.
Young made his second start and pitched another gem, striking out the side in the first two innings. The freshman left-hander allowed a run on four hits and finished with eight strikeouts.
The Bulldogs will play six road games against four opponents over the next 16 days, as they continue to try to build momentum off last year’s national title.
More wins like Wednesday’s will have Navarro ready for just about anything.
