BLOOMING GROVE — —
The Blooming Grove Lions had another underclassman dominated football team out for two-a-days Monday morning.
The Lions had 65 players out, including seven seniors, Blooming Grove coach Gary Grubbs said.
Blooming Grove had nine seniors depart the program last school year.
“It’s still a young team,” said Grubbs, in his second season. “We’re really happy with the numbers.”
The Lions’ defense worked out for the first time with new defensive coordinator Junior Williams, who will keep the 3-4 scheme used last season by Shane Holcomb, who has moved on to Corsicana.
Rice gets in first practice with new coach: Rice coach Jerry Baldridge was pleased after his first practice. He had 35-40 players out and expects more in the next few days.
Baldridge introduced three new assistant coaches plus himself during a brief team meeting before the Bulldogs hit the field. They finished at 11:30 a.m., and yes it was hot when they went in to lift weights.
“It was a scorcher for a first day,” Baldridge said. “It was really hot when we got off the field. It was real upbeat. The players were encouraging each other and happy to be out there.”
Wortham starts anew: First-year Wortham coach Shane Doege had 38 players out for the Bulldogs’ first two-a-day practices.
“It was a little bit more than I was expecting,” Doege said. “The level of focus was impressive to me. They were locked in and the energy level was fine.”

There is a scandal brewing in Austin. No, it has nothing to do with Rick Perry and the rainy day fund or allowing guns on college campuses. It concerns Mack Brown’s boys at the University of Texas.
