Hubbard uses running game to hammer Italy 33-8

AXTELL — — The Hubbard Jaguars (3-1) combined a stellar running game and a tough defensive effort for the second straight week in notching a 33-8 win over Class 1A DI Italy (1-3) by a final score of 33-8 Friday night at Willis Field in Italy.

The Jaguars, who were without star RB Bradley Walker for a second week, got another outstanding effort from junior FB Trey Henderson who was Hubbard’s workhorse with 192 yards and one score on 34 carries.  Junior QB Casen Martin only completed 4-of-14 passes on the evening but three of those went for scores with WR D’Warren Simmons being on the receiving end of two of them.

After nursing an early 7-0 lead throughout the first half, Hubbard added 10 more points in the third quarter on a safety when Italy QB Eric Carson fell on a fumble in his own endzone before Martin and Simmons connected from 21 yards out just two minutes later.

After Martin hit junior WR Nick Johnson with a 15 scoring toss to push Hubbard’s advantage to 23-0,  Italy got on the scoreboard on a 64-yard pass and run from wildcat QB Ryheem Walker to Trevon Robertson midway through the final stanza.

Hubbard added two more scores late in the game when sophomore DL Bryan Walker sacked Carson in the endzone for the Jags’ second safety of the game followed by Henderson capping off a seven play, 40-yard drive with a 3-yard plunge across the goalline.  Martin tossed a pass to Hudson Alderman for the PAT for the game’s final points.
