The Corsicana Tigers are district champions in tennis once again.
The Tigers clinched the District 16-4A title on Tuesday with a 16-3 win on the road in Jacksonville. The Tigers (12-4, 5-0) advanced to the Class 4A Region II tournament for the 28th straight year. The regional tournament is in Denton on Oct. 25-26.
“What a great day for Tiger tennis,” Tigers coach Chad White said. “We won a district championship for the first time in five years. Our players have worked hard and really came together as a team this fall. I’m very proud of them. They deserved it.”
The Tigers dominated in doubles. The boys won all three matches with Johnathan Castan and Brandon Levenson, Ben Crocker and Tyler Schultz and Eric Melton and Vicente Castillo. Girls doubles winners were Maggie Phinney and Caroline Kennemore and Michelle Cho and Melany Betancourt. Christian Minniear and Katie Miller won in mixed doubles.
Singles winners were Castan, Levenson, Crocker, Schultz, Thadius Lane and Jacob Middleton. Girls singles winners were Kennemore, Betancourt, Autumn Grounds and Cecilia Hernandez. Also contributing to the district title with key wins during the season were Grounds and Ellen Yates in doubles.
The Tigers started their district title streak in 1985. Coaches during the run have been Brett Kendall and Robin Blake (1985-96), Jason White (1996-2010) and Chad White (2010-current). Phillip Keltner has been the Tigers assistant coach the last 17 years.

GC Baseball: ’Dogs want more - Windthorst next up for surging Dawson
At this point, it might be easy to classify the rest of the baseball season for Dawson as gravy. But hold on a minute, coach Bo Moore said. The Bulldogs (20-7) are in the Region II-1A semifinals, the club’s deepest trek in many, many moons. To do that, they beat a Dodd City team that ousted them last year in the area round.

There is a scandal brewing in Austin. No, it has nothing to do with Rick Perry and the rainy day fund or allowing guns on college campuses. It concerns Mack Brown’s boys at the University of Texas. Apparently, Mack has filed as a non-profit organization with the IRS. Unfortunately, he filed as a 501C under the name “The U‘T’ Party,” and the IRS has put them under intense scrutiny.
