Corsicana —
With one week of high school football action in the books, the Golden Circle spotlight shines on a much-anticipated 1-A matchup as the Kerens Bobcats play host to the Dawson Bulldogs in the Daily Sun’s Week 1 Game of the Week.
Friday night’s contest features a pair of impressive offensive units. Both the Bulldogs and Bobcats have the ability to chew up yardage and light up the scoreboard, seemingly at will.
The Bulldogs, behind evasive, swivel-hipped senior running back Alex Shaw gashed the Axtell Longhorns for just over 400 yards in Week 0 action. Shaw accounted for well over half of those yards.
Fellow running back Michael Vaughn, who should be back in action after suffering a mild concussion last Friday, and quarterback Trey Tennison each had productive nights on the ground as well for the Bulldogs.
Unfortunately for Dawson, its opponent boasted a similar effort, blasting its way through and around the Bulldog defense for a 300-plus yard outing of its own. One defensive stand made the difference on the scoreboard, and again unfortunately for Dawson, the stand was made by its foe, sending the ‘Dogs into the loss column to begin 2010.
Dawson head coach Scott Hawkins, although frustrated by some aspects of the loss, found some positives, and is always prepared to turn a setback into a learning experience.
“We have a few small things to fix, and a few adjustments to make here and there,” Hawkins said, “but we did see some good things, and I’m sure when we go back and watch the tape, we’ll see a few more.”
With the tough test the Bullodgs have ahead of them, both this Friday and throughout the rest of the season, the coach is glad to have seen those areas for improvement early.
“We knew people were going to be gunning for us,” admitted Hawkins, “and Kerens is really going to get after us when we head over there, too. We have to learn from it, and get ready for everybody’s best effort.”
Kerens, meanwhile, took care of 2A playoff team Edgewood 35-15 behind a stellar game from do-it-all running back Michael Jordan, who found the end zone twice on the ground in a 198-yard rushing effort, and once on the receiving end of a pass from quarterback Jayveon Williams. Jordan led Kerens in rushing, receptions (4), and receiving yards (43) for the night.
Williams connected on nine of twelve passes, hooking up with three different receivers throughout the game. He was also the recipient of quarterback Ryan Leerskov’s lone pass attempt of the contest, a gain of 18 yards. Leerskov left the game following a minor injury but will start Friday.
The dominance of the Bobcat defense boosted the team to a 1-0 record by shutting down Edgewood’s offensive ground attack. Of its opponents rushers, who combined for an anemic total of 46 yards on the ground, Kerens allowed only one to gain double-digits with a mere 27 yards.
