Corsicana —
In the era of spread offenses, Air-Raid attacks and pass-happy coaches, Friday's matchup at Tiger Stadium is a return back to old school roots.
With Kilgore and the Tigers, there are no gimmicky hurry-up offenses with five wide receivers and throws aplenty.
Both teams follow a simple philosophy — run the ball first, run it well and play hard-nosed defense.
With injuries hampering the passing game, the Tigers' rush offense takes on an increased importance to not only move the ball, but churn the clock.
That would mean fewer snaps the Bulldogs have — who average 260 pounds across their front five, including Baylor commit Patrick Colbert — to pound on smaller Tiger linemen up front, and equally more snaps the Tigers have to wear out Kilgore.
"If you're little and you're getting hit over and over, you get tired a lot quicker," Castles said Wednesday. "To give those kids any chance at all, they have to utilize their quickness."
Of course, Tiger quarterback Cameron Cutrer will have to put the ball in the air to keep the Bulldogs honest Friday. Cutrer threw Wednesday and will start Friday, though he won't be 100 percent after getting knocked around last week.
"He's just a tough kid and a good character kid," Castles said. "He took some shots (last week), but he got right back up and didn't blame anybody."
Thomas McDonald, on the other hand, is a game-time decision and will suit up but is not likely to play, Castles said.
Castles said he liked the play of Chad Sterling against Whitehouse, who made several plays from his defensive end position. Breyon Hill will also see an expanded role this week, spelling both Tevin McDonald and Cameron Washington at their linebacker spots.
But senior Myron Glover may have been the brightest spot on the Tiger defense last week, making several plays defending Whitehouse's passing attack. Glover, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound cornerback, will lead the Tigers on the field Friday carrying the team's emblem, a piece of lumber. It represents the team's defensive slogan — "Bring the wood."
"Everybody that comes this way is going to get D'ed up. Point blank," Glover said last week. "We've got the defense for them, and we've got the men to do it."
While the Tigers make their home debut Friday night, Kilgore will be taking care of its own early-season butterflies.
"Being our first ballgame, we're looking forward to it," Bulldogs first-year coach Mike Wood said. "They're going to be trying to get the jitters out, but hopefully we can get out there and compete."
