UPDATE: Last week the Riesel Indians beat Snook 46-0 in Snook’s first varsity football game since the 1950s ... Wortham had four players with more than 60 yards rushing in their 21-13 win over Blooming Grove in their season opener ... When the teams faced off last year, the Indians came out ahead 15-6 in a close contest ... Riesel lost 14 seniors off its quarterfinal playoff team of last year but are returning many skill players ... one returner is the senior Marshall, who had 651 yards on 89 carries last season with seven touchdowns ... Wortham senior Hance Spencer lead the team in tackles in 2009 with 72 ...  Outside linebacker Brandon Lansford is evolving into an impact player on defense.

UPDATE: The Hubbard Jaguars are looking to turn things around after a disappointing performance last week against Bosqueville, losing 0-54.....Junior QB Cole Hill is looking to bounce back after throwing three interceptions last week, one of which was returned for a touchdown.....The Jags are still looking for their first score of the year, and they will be looking to senior WR Kesen and junior RB Ben Morris to breach into the end zone.....The Scurry-Rosser Wildcats dominated all aspects of their opening game against Malakoff Cross Roads last week.....The Wildcats more than doubled Cross Roads’ total yards, 531 to 245 ... Senior RB Cruz ran the ball for 240 yards and four touchdowns with an average of 9.6 yards per carry

PLAYERS TO WATCH:  Rice:  QB/LB Michael Bustamante, WR/DB Shaquille Fields, RB/LB Ragan Henderson, OL/DB Matt Williams.  Itasca:  RB Shakeal Mozon, LB BJ Jackson, WR Oppie Mayberry, DT Martell Wallace.

UPDATE:  Itasca beat the Bulldogs 51-15 in Week 1 last year and leads the all-time series 9-1 … Itasca beat Ranger 18-6 to open the season, while Rice lost 28-7 to Class 2A Rio Vista … After giving up 28 points in the first half, the Rice defense pitched a shutout in the second half … Rice running back Ragan Henderson rushed for 87 yards and scored on a 35-yard touchdown, also adding a sack on defense … Shaquille Fields led the Rice defense with 11 tackles.  On offense, Fields added three receptions … Senior FB Levi Plunkett notched 86 yards rushing for the Bulldogs … Itasca has qualified for the playoffs in all three seasons under head coach Craig Horn, who has a 28-6 record … The Wampus Cats held Ranger to only 98 yards rushing …

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Mildred: QB/CB Nic Shimonek, OL/DL Noah Pennell, OL/DL Thomas Finigmow, WR/DB Rody Seilheimer. Palmer: QB Judge Wolfe, DL/OL Christian Ramirez, RB/LB Luke Price, WR/DB Cord Langthorn.  

UPDATE: Palmer is coming off a 49-21 victory against Mildred district-mate Red Oak Life … defense was a challenge for the Bulldogs in ‘09, as they gave up an average of more than 40 points a game … QB Wolfe ran for five touchdowns and threw for one more in last week’s win … the last meeting between both teams, occuring in 2005, resulted in a 56-49 victory for the Eagles … Mildred will be without pre-season All-Golden Circle WR Daniel Folsom, who is currently in California attending his brother's boot camp graduation … the Eagles will look to improve their running performance after putting up just 15 total yards of rushing in last week’s 24-21 loss to Teague ... Shimonek threw for 281 yards last week, 194 going to junior WR Daniel Donoho.

UPDATE: Lakehill Prep went 6-4 last year playing 6-Man.  This year the Warriors will compete in TAPPS Div. IV – District 2 (a district that features TAPPS Div. IV 2008 and 2009 State Champs Richardson – Canyon Creek).

... The Polar Bears beat Krum last week 25-22.  In the game, RB Danial Steels and FB Philip Page combined for 306-yards rushing.  Steels ran for 147-yards on 23 carries including a 27-yard touchdown run.  Page averaged 9.3 yards per tote gaining 159-yards on 17 carries with 52-yard and 6-yard touchdown runs… Lakehill Prep defeated Savoy 33-12 last week ...  RB Charles Burch ran 190-yards on 18 carries with 55-yard and 45-yard touchdown runs … Highland Park transfer QB Tyler Wertz completed  two of nine passes for 57-yards with two interceptions.

UPDATE: Rio Vista is coming off of a 28-7 win over Rice l last week ... Blooming Grove lost a heartbreaker 21-13 at Wortham ... Blooming Grove will look early and often their young and potentially lethal passing game with sophmore QB Jayd Kirby ... Kirby threw for 178 yards and ran for 48 and two touchdowns against Wortham ... McGraw caught six balls for 84 yards to lead all Lion receivers ... the Blooming Grove defense will need try stop the Rio Vista ground game, which ran for 431 yards against Rice ... RB Wood had 239 of them, and Atchison ran for 135 more ... A win by Blooming Grove will be a big momentum booster for the young Lions to build on... Next week Blooming Grove will entertain Rice for Homecoming.

  • Navarro Baseball: Sutton, Autrey commit to Lamar

    The Navarro Bulldogs continue to be a pipeline to Division I baseball programs.
    Outfielder Jake Sutton and pitcher J.T. Autrey verbally committed to Lamar University, totaling six Navarro sophomores to sign or commit off this year’s team which made it to the championship game of the Region XIV Tournament.

    The guy who brought the spread to Mildred and called the plays that led 47.9 points per game last year is headed south. Offensive coordinator Kevin Morton, 40, was offered the athletic director and head football coach’s job in Normangee Wednesday night and accepted. Normangee Superintendent Jerry Burger said Morton will be the only candidate presented to the board next Thursday.

    Corsicana third baseman Hunter Melton and Dawson second baseman Slade Chasteen have been selected to play in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association High School All-Star Games on June 16-17 in Round Rock. The game is for seniors and will be played at Dell Diamond.

  • 5-24-12 Gage Curry Navarro Baseball: Curry honored again

    Navarro left fielder Kaleb Goodell was named the Region XIV Player of the Year and three other Bulldogs made the all-region team. Goodell was joined on the All-Region XIV team by pitcher Gage Curry — the freshman from Corsicana — as well as third baseman Craig McConaughy.

  • 5-23 Tapley MVP GC Softball: Mildred’s Tapley nabs 14-2A MVP

    Mildred senior Katie Tapley was named 14-2A Most Valuable Player voted on by the district coaches.
    Tapley batted over .500 for the season and had eight home runs.

  • Navarro, Corsicana HS to host baseball camp

    Navarro College and Corsicana High School will host an All-Star Baseball Camp June 4-6 at Corsicana High School.
    The camp is for ages 6 through 16 years old. Each day’s session will go from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
