Besieged by four turnovers and 20 penalties, No. 8-ranked Navarro fell to No. 10 Kilgore 45-35 on Saturday at R. E. St. John Stadium.
Navarro (3-1 overall, 1-1 in the SWJCFC) fell behind early and continually played catch-up football to the undefeated Rangers (4-0, 2-0) Navarro took a 35-30 lead early in the fourth quarter on Traylon Shead’s fourth touchdown run.
Kilgore responded with a 25-yard TD run by Joe Herrick off a blocked field goal to take the lead. Tanner Tausch passes to Darrin Brown for the two-point conversion, giving the Rangers a 38-35 lead.
Navarro quarterback Stump Godfrey struggled the entire night (11-31-1-147) and was picked off by defensive back James Jones on the ensuring series. Jones navigated 49 yards for a touchdown and Yovany Arvizu’s extra points gave Kilgore its 10-point victory).
Navarro’s 182 penalty yards was 35 more than it had in the passing game. Kilgore was also penalized 14 times for 140 yards.
Shead had 109 yards on 14 carries and had a 60-yard TD run wiped out by a penalty.
Kilgore’s Tausch was 19 of 34 for 210 yards and three scores, including TD strikes of 16 and 24 yards to Ed’Marquez Batties.
