GC Volleyball weekend roundup: Dawson hangs on, beats Hubbard

Wortham tops Kerens; Frost wins again

Courtney Warren had two kills and eight assists as Dawson hung on to beat rival Hubbard in five sets 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 14-25, 15-6 on Saturday in a District 14-1A match.

Demi Dotson had 10 kills, three digs and two aces for Dawson (9-10, 3-4). Stormi Matthews had two digs. Kaylee Martinez had two kills, two digs and seven assists. Scheri Montgomery had three digs. Jalyn Miller had a kill, a block and three assists. Michaela Greer had two kills, a block and an assist. Steph Lindsey had seven kills, two blocks and three aces.

Hubbard is 2-5 in district and 13-19 overall.

Wortham beats Kerens to add to 2nd-place lead: Wortham defeated Kerens 25-23, 25-15, 18-25, 25-13 on Saturday to take control of second place in District 14-1A.

Wortham improved to 6-1 at the district halfway point, a game behind first-place Cayuga (7-0) in the standings. Kerens fell to 4-3 in district and 13-10 overall.

Frost sweeps Avalon: Hillaree Schwartz had three kills, five assists and an ace as Frost finished off the first round of district with a 25-16, 25-19, 25-18 victory over Avalon.

Dakota Lassetter had a kill and eight assists for Frost (9-8, 5-2). Diana Rios had four kills and two digs. Jae Moore had three digs and four aces. Kadee Bowling had four kills. Kaycee Bowling had four assists and three digs.

Rice tops Buffalo in 4: Katelyn Northcutt had seven kills and two blocks as Rice beat Buffalo on Saturday 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20.

Rice (12-9, 2-1 in 23-2A) was led by Celina Smithers, who had three aces, 12 kills and five blocks. Sadie Gent was 13 of 14 serving with three kills, 11 digs and a save. Paige Allen was 7 of 7 serving with three kills, two saves and seven digs. Sarah Gent was 21 of 23 serving with two saves and 16 assists. Hanna Owens had three aces and six assists.

The Rice JV won 25-13, 25-16 as Porshia Rhodes and Sarah Barath played well. The Rice freshman lost to Buffalo 25-11, 25-9 as Emily Northcutt and Phadashia Wallace played well.
