Navarro football: Bulldogs make schedule adjustment with Lon Morris out

Dawgs will play Southeast Prep on Oct. 13 at Tiger Stadium

Corsicana — Navarro’s football schedule was adjusted Thursday with Lon Morris announcing that all of its athletic teams have been eliminated.

The Bulldogs will replace Lon Morris on the schedule with a non-conference game against Southeast Prep on Oct. 13. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.

“We just finished reworking the schedule,” Navarro athletic director Roark Montgomery said Thursday. “Blinn has played Southeast Prep the last few years.”

The schedule for the remaining sports still has to be worked on, Montgomery said.

Basketball presents some problems since Lon Morris had a men’s and women’s program (Navarro doesn’t have a women’s team).

The conference’s baseball coaches will meet Thursday. The conversation is to go back to playing each conference opponent four times — two doubleheaders — as opposed to six times last year. Baseball also has lost Texarkana, but added Angelina back.

The plan could be to move the baseball and softball conference seasons back later in the season and schedule more non-conference games and tournaments.

The biggest worries at this point are the football, volleyball and soccer schedules with all three sports played in the fall, Montgomery said.

The conference did add Paris in soccer, so there will still be four teams with Navarro, Tyler and Northeast as the others.

Maybe the most difficult thing to take about the end of athletics at Lon Morris? No more games against legendary basketball coach Dale Dotson, who also coached the Corsicana Tigers. His son Ricky Dotson, his assistant at Lon Morris, played for the Tigers.

It always made for an interesting rivalry between the Runnin’ Bulldogs and Lon Morris.

“I feel bad for him and Ricky,” Montgomery said. “Dale said he had a good recruiting class coming in. There was always a little extra drama when we played Dale so we’ll miss that.”
