Corsicana —
Okay, maybe I jumped the gun a little bit on Mark Cuban and the Mavericks. Plan A better known as signing Deron Williams fell through. Plan B aka signing Steve Nash didn’t happen either. Plan C or resigning Jason Kidd hit the skids. And, Plan D moving Jason Terry to point guard fell by the wayside as well.
If nothing else, Donnie Nelson is resilient. He did fill out a roster that looks promising. The Mavericks got a lot younger and more athletic while maintaining cap and contract flexibility to make a move if and when a major free agent comes available. I still don’t think a BIG name player will come to Dallas, but you have to give them credit for optimism.
Of course, it’s obvious that amid the former world championships of the Cowboys, the Stars and the Mavericks, the model franchise in the area just happens to be the Texas Rangers who are still in search of their first championship.
When you consider that they have their best record ever at this point in the season despite a spate of injuries to the pitching staff, a prolonged slump by Mike Napoli and the ups and downs of Josh Hamilton, it’s all pretty mind blowing.
The Rangers name keeps popping up in discussions of the three prime pitching targets prior to the trade deadline. I’m absolutely certain that Jon Daniels is doing his due diligence on assessing all three. His farm system certainly has the prospects to pull off just such a trade.
The question is, why? If you bring one of them in, just where does he fit? Among Matt Harrison, Yu Darvish, Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz, Colby Lewis and Roy Oswalt, who do you bump? If you bothered to count, I just listed six starters for five spots as it stands now. Who sits right now without adding a starter? If you add a starter then you have to bump two. Once the playoffs start, they go with a four man rotation. Who sits during the playoffs? Unless they add a Cliff Lee-like ace, I don’t see them trading for a pitcher.
If there is any addition, I see it being a right handed bat off the bench, or perhaps another lefthander for the bullpen.
That brings us to Jerry’s problem child, Dez Bryant. In the past, the big news with Dez has been his debts with jewelers and his sagging pants at North Park. Now, he’s gone and gotten himself arrested. His offense? Slapping his momma. Not that it makes any difference, but it seems that his momma has a drug use record and is only 13 years older than Dez, or barely older than my daughter.
There is no doubt that Dez is physically talented. He has the size, speed and hands to be a great receiver. However, we’ve only seen a few flashes of that potential. You want some empty numbers? Last season, he had 63 catches for 927 yards, a very respectable season. Yet, how often can you remember any of those catches being meaningful in the fourth quarter? When the chips were down, Romo preferred to go to a receiver that the Cowboys picked up off the streets at the end of training camp.
I’ve often heard commentators mention that Dez doesn’t run very good routes. I also have it on pretty good authority that he’s not an offseason workout warrior.
There may have been a legitimate reason that so many teams passed on such a talented receiver allowing Jerry to move up to make the pick. Maybe they knew something that Jerry either didn’t know or ignored. In Jerry’s haste to make up for passing on another problem child talented receiver several years ago, he just might have drafted a newer version.
Jon Daniels has a plan. Although he may have had to resort to Plan F, at least Donnie Nelson has a few plans. For someone who is so brilliant in business plans, when it comes to football plans I’m afraid Jerry is clueless.
