Hillsboro puts clamps on Mildred, 22-0
The difference: In a word, momentum. Anytime Mildred got it, Hillsboro took it back. Right before the half, Trevor Owen mis-timed a jump on a sure interception. Two plays later, Hillsboro hit a field goal to go up 10-0. On Mildred’s opening second half drive, another high snap foiled a field goal attempt, though Owen had the presence of mind to pick it up and punt it, penning Hillsboro at the 4. It came after an impressive drive. The next play, Chris Green scored from 96 yards and Hillsboro was in complete control.
Standouts: It was the Green and McGruder show for Hillsboro. Green had 259 yards on 14 carries, and McGruder 110 on 15 carries and two TDs. Logan Shelton showed some spark, gaining 45 yards on seven carries for Mildred.
Game notes: Hillsboro had five carries for 39 or more yards in the game; Mildred has one of 20 or more all year, and it came 62 minutes into the season on a Shelton 24-yard run in the third quarter … Mildred suited out 22 players, and at some point six were injured. Rody Seilheimer (1Q) and Clay Harrell, Daniel Donoho and Reuben Yankie – all in the third – did not return after leaving … freshman QB Nic Shimonek continues to learn on a quick curve on Friday nights. Four of his five completions went for first downs, and one of his interceptions came when he appeared to try to throw the ball away and Hillsboro LB Sean Bates made a great catch on it … the last time the Eagles scored 3 or fewer points in a two-game stretch in the regular season was 1994, back-to-back shutouts to Bremond and Oakwood.
Stat of the game: 10 and 3. Both teams had 41 offensive snaps, but Hillsboro averaged 10 yards per play, Mildred 3.1.
Records: Mildred 0-2, Hillsboro 1-1
They said it: “We played hard until the end, we just have to toughen up a little.” — Mildred coach Patrick Harvell
