Blooming Grove falls short to Maypearl, 15-12
BLOOMING GROVE -- After last week's narrow loss to Wortham, Blooming Grove was determined to not make the same mistakes in Week 1 at home against Maypearl.
Lions' head coach Scott Doring said his team was able to stay with the Panthers to the very end, but miscues cost Blooming Grove its second straight game, 15-12.
"I knew if we played well, we could stay in until the end," Doring said. "We were able to this week. We had a lot more positives than negatives this week. We played well on defense and cleaned up. We still made mistakes on offense, but it was better than last week."
Blooming Grove (0-2) had several chances to maintain the 6-2 lead it took to halftime. Stewart Chambers gave the Lions a boost at the beginning of the second half when he recovered a fumble on the kickoff at the 25-yard line. Trey Davis scored on a 4-yard touchdown run 2:33 later to cushion Blooming Grove's lead, 12-2.
After Maypearl went 4-and-out, the Lions gave the ball back after two plays on an interception. Maypearl quarterback Conner Vaughan ran five times during the next series and passed once to Malcolm Watkins for a 15-yard gain before running in a 1-yard touchdown.
The Lions went 4-and-out before Vaughan struck again, this time with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Hernandez with 1:24 left in the third quarter.
Blooming Grove had another opportunity for a score late in the fourth quarter, but was only able to get to the 46-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
"We played well enough to win," Doring said. "We had the lead and got a fumble recovery, then the defense held their ground pretty well. We were better than last week."
Vaughan led the Panthers with 20 carries for 46 yards and completed 6-of-14 passes for 125 yards. Lucas Leal led Maypearl with two catches for 60 yards.
Michael Lunsford rushed for 30 yards on nine carries for Blooming Grove, and Davis touched the ball 11 times for nine yards. Matt Bayer, Jordan Tennell and Devante Starling each caught three passes for the Lions.
Blooming Grove will try to earn its first win next week at home against Reisel.
