The Lady Tigers’ upset bid of district favorite and No. 18-ranked Lindale fell short Tuesday night. Mainly because Corsicana couldn’t get any shots to fall in a frigid fourth quarter.
The Lady Tigers didn’t make a shot from the field in the final eight minutes, managing just one free throw, and that allowed Lindale to pull away for a 49-37 victory at Tiger Gym.
Corsicana (14-11, 0-2) positioned itself for a chance to knock off the only ranked team in District 16-4A. Destini Lunsford nailed a long two-point shot with two seconds left in the third quarter to cut Lindale’s lead to 41-36.
It was the last shot the Tigers would sink. Corsicana couldn’t buy a hoop in the fourth quarter, whether it was a 3-pointer or a drive to the basket. Lindale’s size advantage — the Eagles had three players over 6-feet tall — made it difficult to shoot over defenders.
And the Lady Tigers made only 3 of their 9 free throw attempts in the second half and were 14 of 26 for the game.
“We played hard,” Prevost said. “When you’re playing against a good team like that, you have to make your free throws.”
The Lady Tigers’ pressure defense created problems for Lindale. Corsicana tied the game at 23-23 with 2:00 left in the second quarter and trailed 28-25 at halftime.
Lindale came close to leading by double digits in the third quarter, but Corsicana kept slicing into the lead as Shamara Taylor hit a 3-pointer and Lunsford scored five points.
The Lady Tigers played well enough on defense in the fourth quarter to win. Lindale made only two shots, one of them with two seconds left with the game already decided. The Eagles did make 4 of 6 free throws in the quarter and 19 of 31 for the the game.
Taylor led Corsicana with 11 points. Tatayana Betts added nine points.
Corsicana plays at Whitehouse on Friday night (so do they boys). Whitehouse has to recover from a 66-36 loss to Nacogdoches.
If gives the Lady Tigers hope that if they play defense like they did Tuesday night, and make some shots, they can turnaround their two-loss start in district.
“We win our games at home,” Prevost said. “We just have to make shots.”
