Rio Vista upends Blooming Grove, 44-30

BLOOMING GROVE — Rio Vista overcame a one-point second half deficit, scoring 14 unanswered points as the Eagles topped the Blooming Grove Lions 44-30.

Rio Vista is now 4-5 overall, while Blooming Grove is 6-3 on the season. Both teams are 3-3 in District 6-2A DII action.

The Eagles were trailing 30-29 before scoring back to back touchdowns in the second half. Quarterback Nick Russell scored two touchdowns in the game on runs of 47 and 13 yards, respectively. He also had a 26-yard TD pass to Ryan Jimison.

Blooming Grove trailed 29-17 early in the second half before scoring on two big plays to take the lead. Quarterback Jayd Kirby scored on runs of 60 and 30 yards, respectively, as the Lions went up 30-29 with 5:22 left in the third quarter.

Rio Vista went up 22-7 early in the game before BG cut the lead to five before half. Tyler Ellis booted a 34-yard field goal and then Travis Whiteside scored his second touchdown of the night on a 1-yard plunge with 1:06 remaining before intermission. Whiteside scored in the first quarter on a 10-yard run.

Blooming Grove will travel to Millsap next Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30.
