GRAPEVINE — —
The Tigers tennis team took eighth place at the Class 4A Region II Tournament Friday and Saturday in Grapevine.
The Tigers finished the season with a 13-4 record, including 5-0 in district. At one point Corsicana had a nine-match winning streak and didn’t lose in September.
On Friday, the Tigers won their first-round match against Mansfield Legacy 10-1. Corsicana was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the No. 1 team in the state, Highland Park.
“We played well and looked competitive against them,” Tigers coach Chad White said. “Our top boys teams (Jonathan) Castan and (Brandon) Levenson only lost 6-3, 6-2 to their team that consisted of spring state qualifiers in previous years.”
The mixed-doubles team of Katie Miller and Christian Minniear lost 6-3, 6-2, a good result against the No. 1 team in state.
On Saturday, the Tigers played No. 12 Lovejoy in a consolation match and lost 10-5. The Tigers swept the boys doubles matches and trailed only 4-3 going into the singles.
The Tigers played a marathon match for seventh place against Frisco Wakeland, another perennial power and lost 10-7.
The match, which started at 1:30 p.m., lasted 4 1/2 hours. The Tigers trailed 5-2 after doubles but won five straight singles matches to go up 7-6. But the Tigers lost four three-set matches to lose.
“Overall we came away knowing we are right there with the top teams in the state but just came up short,” White said. “We couldn’t pull it out. Our players will now have more confidence against these top teams. “
