Corsicana —
A young team relies on its experienced players to get through growing pains. Saturday was an example how Navarro’s defense is more than able to take charge until the offense achieves quality footing in 2010.
Navarro limited Georgia Military to 170 yards total offense and nine first downs in a workmanlike 27-7 win at Tiger Stadium, evening the Bulldogs’ season mark at 1-1 on the season.
It was the second week in a row Navarro held a traditionally solid offensive team to less than 200 yards. The Bulldogs sacked Georgia Military quarterback Dylan Haddix six times and allowed just 2.7 yards per rushing attempt.
After a sluggish start, Navarro’s offense began to grind in the second quarter, collecting touchdowns from four different players while playing two quarterbacks and a host of running backs behind an offensive line missing starting tackle Michael Bowie (foot injury).
“I feel good about our football team right now,” said Navarro Coach Nick Bobeck. “We did some really good things today, but we also have a lot of things to work on the next week before we start conference play.”
Navarro scored its first touchdown at the 11:50 mark of the second period on a 6-yard slant from Roddy Green to Jahmai Coleman after getting the ball inside the GMC 10 thanks to linebacker Malcolm Walker’s fumble recovery.
Navarro extended its lead to 13-0 after three periods when Green dashed in from 8 yards on an option play. Fellow signal-caller Adrian Nelson set up the scoe with a 49-yard pass to Coleman. Nelson took all but one snap in the second half and finished 12 of 20 for 179 yards.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 27-0 late in the fourth period with scoring runs of 2 yards by DePauldrick Garrett and 8 yards from Daniel Palmer.
Georgia Military’s lone touchdown came with less than six minutes remaining on a 2-yard fade pass from Haddix to Corey Robertson. The duo set up the touchdown with a 48-yard completion that also featured a pair of personal foul penalties on Navarro that pushed the ball to the Navarro 4.
“Sometimes when you get a slow start on offense, you need the defense to make some big plays and then we feed off that,” said Coleman, who had a game-high five catches for 96 yards. “It’s a mental thing our offense is getting past right now. Once we began to get everyone on the same page, we’re going to be playing really well, just like our defense is right now.”
Registering sacks for the Bulldogs were linemen Joey Searcy, Andre Jones, Toby Jackson and Bubba Vactor. Cameron Henderson also pounced on a fumble that ended a GMC drive at the Navarro 25.
