DAWSON - The Battle of Highway 31 was a lopsided affair Friday night as the Hubbard Jaguars pounced on the Dawson Bulldogs, 70-0, at Ed Mitchell Field.
The visitors drew first blood with 6:13 on the clock in the first quarter, as Trey Henderson logged both a 5-yard scoring rush and a two-point conversion to give the Jaguars (7-2, 3-0) an 8-0 lead. Henderson finished the night with 85 yards on six carries.
Just under four minutes later Hubbard quarterback Casen Martin connected on his first of two scoring tosses in the game, both in the first half. Wide receiver D'Warren Simmons hauled in the first from 16 yards out with 2:22 left in the opening period. Simmons led all receivers on the night with three receptions for 65 yards.
With a little over four minutes remaining until intermission Martin hit tight end Hudson Alderman on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Alderman finished with three catches for 44 yards. The junior also hauled in two point-after receptions in the contest.
A pair of interceptions by Dawson's (0-9, 0-3) defense held Hubbard’s halftime lead to 24-0.
Only 28 seconds had ticked off the clock in the second quarter when freshman defensive back Lane Dotson picked off a wobbly pass deep in Bulldog territory to thwart a Jaguar drive.
With time about to expire in the first half, Dawson senior Mark Martinez got a paw on another pass, deflecting it to classmate Jake Strother to end a late scoring threat with the visitors driving deep.
Everything seemed to go the Jaguars’ way in the final two periods. Hubbard scored four third quarter touchdowns to drive most of the final nails in the coffin.
Senior Bradley Walker broke loose for a 59-yard touchdown run on the first offensive play of the second half, setting the tone for the final 24 minutes of play. Walker led all rushers with 121 yards on the ground.
Casey Jones returned a Dawson punt 84 yards to the Bulldog 1-yard-line after the ensuing drive by the home team stalled at midfield. Hubbard junior Jordan Johnson recorded his first of two 1-yard scoring dives just one play later.
With less than 10 seconds remaining in the third stanza, sophomore Bryan Walker scooped up a Dawson fumble and rumbled 22 yards to the end zone, putting the Jaguars up, 56-0. Just 3:27 were left in the game when the Hubbard defensive end landed on another Bulldog fumble. Walker’s second fumble recovery ended Dawson’s deepest drive of the night at the Hubbard six yard line.
