Blooming Grove rolls to 33-8 victory over Red Oak Life

BLOOMING GROVE -- —

Brandon Hays had two rushing touchdowns and another receiving and quarterback Jayd Kirby rushed for 121 yards and passed for 111 as the Blooming Grove Lions rolled to a 33-8 win over Red Oak Life in the season opener for both teams.

The stingy Lions defense held Red Oak Life to 42 yards of total offense, while Blooming Grove racked up 414  yards on offense.

Kirby connected with Hays on a 35-yard TD pass in the first quarter and then the senior signal-caller rushed for a 15-yard touchdown with 2:53 left in the half to put BG up 14-0 at intermission.

Hays scored on runs of 37 and 10 yards in the third quarter, and then Blooming Grove added a safety and Tyler Ellis booted a 42-yard field goal for a commanding 38-0 lead.

The Mustangs’ lone score came with five minutes left in the contest.

    Parker Ray pitched eight-plus innings to lead Texas A&M to a 5-0 victory over top-seeded Vanderbilt on Wednesday in the second round of the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament. Hunter Melton of Corsicana homered for the second straight day.

    When Tuesday’s rains blew through Hubbard, blowing up the last half of practice, the Lady Jags loaded up, and went home. They can only hope to be loading up and going south next week. Hubbard (24-6-1) has a chance to set GPS devices for Austin if the Lady Jags can get past Sam Rayburn (28-2) Friday in the Region II-1A championship.
