The Lady Tigers found themselves in a difficult test with Class 2A Teague on Monday night.
Corsicana passed it.
Shamara Taylor and Calae Wilson each had 12 points as the Lady Tigers held on for a 53-45 victory at Tiger Gym. Corsicana finished off a stretch of eight games in seven days with a 4-4 record.
The Lady Tigers (5-4) had trouble getting away from the Lady Lions, twice building a lead of nine points, only to have Teague crawl back into the game with hard work at the offensive end.
But the Lady Tigers’ defense, especially that of their guards Calae Wilson, Shamara Taylor and Alexis Baston, forced turnovers at key times and turned them into points. Taylor had an eye-popping 13 steals and Wilson had seven.
“I thought Shay Shay Taylor’s defense was outstanding,” Lady Tigers coach Art Prevost said. “Alexis Baston is stepping up and making some really big plays. Those two players did things we needed to win.”
The Lady Tigers led 47-38 on a steal and layup by Taylor with 4:41 left in the game, but Teague made two straight baskets, including a 3-pointer by Danielle McWilliams, to cut the Corsicana lead to 47-43.
Baston and Wilson led the recovery, scoring back-to-back baskets to build the lead back to 51-43.
“We have moments when we look like a good team and moments when we’re trying to find ourselves,” Prevost said.
Corsicana won twice on Saturday on the final day of the Janie Biltz Tournament, beating Beaumont Westbrook 48-33 and Seagoville 69-17, helping the Lady Tigers split their six games over three days.
Wilson had 17 points to lead all scorers in the Westbrook game. Baston had a game-high 14 points, including 2 3-pointers, in the win over Seagoville.

GC Softball: Single focus - Hubbard has sights set on steady Sam Rayburn
When Tuesday’s rains blew through Hubbard, blowing up the last half of practice, the Lady Jags loaded up, and went home. They can only hope to be loading up and going south next week. Hubbard (24-6-1) has a chance to set GPS devices for Austin if the Lady Jags can get past Sam Rayburn (28-2) Friday in the Region II-1A championship.
