AP source: Napoli, Boston strike $39M, 3-year deal

Catcher Geovany Soto is staying with Rangers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — —

A person familiar with the negotiations says catcher Mike Napoli and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a $39 million, three-year contract.

The deal is subject to Napoli passing a physical, which will take place later this week, the person said Monday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet final.

A 31-year-old who also plays first base, Napoli hit .320 with 30 homers and 75 RBIs as the Texas Rangers won their second straight AL pennant in 2011, then slumped to a .227 average with 24 homers and 56 RBIs this year.

Soto re-signs with Rangers: A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that catcher Geovany Soto is staying with the Texas Rangers and has agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract.

Soto's agreement allows him to earn an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal has not yet been announced.

Soto, who turns 30 next month, hit .196 with five homers and 25 RBIs in 47 games last season as the backup for Mike Napoli, who agreed to a $39 million, three-year deal with Boston.

Texas allowed Soto to become a free agent when it failed to offer a contract by Friday's deadline. The move allowed the team to cut his salary, which was $4.3 million this year, by more than 20 percent.

  • RON MORGAN.jpg Morgan: Solid shape - Despite injuries, Rangers just fine

Let me see a show of hands. Who was worried this season about the Rangers losing Josh Hamilton, Michael Young and Mike Napoli? Come on, now. You know it was hard to see how they would replace both the production and the leadership provided by that threesome. Oh, and let’s add that they would have to start the season without Coby Lewis and Neftali Feliz. Surely, you had to wonder if even Moses could lead us could lead us out of the AL West.
