The Frost Polar Bears finally won an area round playoff game. In resounding fashion.
The Polar Bears executed their offense to near perfection in the second half Thursday night, pulling away from Blum for a 55-29 victory in a Region III-1A DII area round playoff game at Hillsboro High School.
Frost (16-6) had lost four straight area round games, including three in a row after winning a district title and getting a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Danial Steels scored 21 points, including 11 points after halftime. Jacob Stroder added 10 points. The Polar Bears outscored Blum 36-16 in the second half.
"We started hitting our shots in the second half," Frost coach Eric Blenden said. "And we started playing defense. They were tough."
Frost bolted out to an 11-4 first-quarter lead, but Blum's Trey Gibbs and Jarred Shaffer pulled their team back into the game, combining for seven points in the second quarter to cut the lead to 19-13 at halftime.
Frost used balanced scoring to start the second half as Robert Worley, Andrew Jackson, Steels and Stroder led Frost on a 10-0 run for a 29-13 lead. That hot start to the second half basically decided the game.
"We decided at halftime we wanted to come out and get the win," Stroder said.
Steels had four points to start the fourth quarter, one of many big stretches he had in the game. He also scored 10 of the final 12 points for Frost in the second half.
The Polar Bears will play the Milford-Huckabay winner in the next round. A win in that game and it's off to the regional tournament in Tyler.
Frost will have the confidence of its first area round win after four consecutive years of not taking the next step.
"It's good to get this done," Blenden said.
